Henry Chapman was born in Brooklyn (NY) in 1987, where he lives and works.
He studied at Cooper Union (NY) where he was awarded as young talent of the year in 2013, and at Yale University, where he completed his MFA in 2015.
In his paintings, description embodies time: notational, calligraphic, and extralinguistic. His research focuses on the interaction between shapes and in his pieces, contemporary social and political issues are strongly highlighted thanks to his extraordinary use of colors.
“I have come to think of color as the syntax of painting: its relationships regulate and organize the canvas. And, like syntax, color creates a sensory perception of time. To practice color means to be in relation to the past: through color, I am intimately connected to the thoughts and feelings of other practitioners, both living and dead, more than in any other aspect of artistic creation.”
